International Children’s Day, celebrated annually in June, is an initiative to raise awareness for children’s well-being and rights. After learning about the need to renovate the children’s playroom at The Women’s Safe House, Kameryn Arnold, a 2023 graduate of St. Charles West High School, decided to take action to create a positive and safe environment for families experiencing abuse.
To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, Arnold partnered with The Women’s Safe House, a nonprofit dedicated to serving women and children of domestic abuse, to update the children’s playroom. Arnold led a team of volunteers to clean the room, paint the walls, build shelves and replace the ceiling light fixtures. Afterward, Arnold stocked the playroom with books and educational toys for the residents and presented the new space to The Women’s Safe House executives.
Arnold’s remodeled playroom saw an increase in children using the space. The Women’s Safe House staff will continue to ensure the playroom stays clean and well-maintained in the future.
The Girl Scout Gold Award – the highest award in Girl Scout – is earned by Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, girls in 9th-12th grade, who dedicate more than 80 hours identifying a need in their community and providing lasting solutions to issues in their neighborhoods and beyond. Gold Award Girl Scouts truly are the world changers, rock stars, role models, and real-life heroes we all look up to.
