Volunteers who complete this blended-learning course that incorporates Basic Water Rescue may serve as the primary trained waterfront personnel required to open a GSEM camp lake and supervise a canoeing activity at any of our properties. Participants will learn GSEM waterfront policies, basic safety guidelines for canoeing, how to maneuver a canoe using flat water paddling strokes, and how to prevent, recognize and respond to many canoeing emergencies. The online portion must be completed in gsLearn before attending the in-person skills session. This course is renewable every three years.

Girl Scouts 16 years and older are welcome to participate. Scholarships are available. The in-person skills session at a camp lake requires strenuous physical activity, including capsizing, emptying and reboarding a canoe while wearing a life jacket. Practicing these skills may result in minor scratches or bruises.
