To make registering for Small Craft Safety: Canoeing and its prerequisite, Basic Water Rescue, simple and convenient, these two courses are now bundled into a single blended-learning course. Basic Water Rescue may still be completed as a stand-alone course if desired. This blended-learning course consists of online modules and an in-person skills session. In this course, participants will learn basic safety guidelines for canoeing, how to maneuver a canoe using flat water paddling strokes, and how to prevent, recognize, and respond to many canoeing emergencies. Hands-on skills, including managing a canoe and performing rescue techniques, will be practiced at one of our camp's lakes. Please note that the skills session requires strenuous physical activity, including capsizing, emptying, and reboarding a canoe while wearing a life jacket. Practicing these skills may result in minor scratches or bruises.
