Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM) is proud to highlight Girl Scout Troop 2462 from West County and their recent Bronze Award Project, helping improve the facilities at a local Girl Scout Camp property.
Girl Scout Juniors Angela Deepu, Anwitha Chinta, Avanthika Nair, Lilly Koczan, Natalie Rodger, Ruby McCown, Sahana Ajay were concerned about the lack of seating outside the pool house at Camp Fiddlecreek, located in Labadie, Mo. On hot summer days, Girl Scout campers would have to sit on the scorching pavement to put on and take off their shoes before entering the pool house. Determined to help find a solution, the Girl Scout troop designed and constructed four sturdy cedar benches and installed them by the sidewalk leading up to the shower house. Campers are now able to sit on the benches before entering and exiting the shower house, resulting in an enhanced camp experience.
“We selected this topic for our Bronze Award because when my troop mate Ruby brought up the idea of building benches for the pool, and how the sidewalk was always hot it clicked and made the most sense,” said Angela Deepu. “It helps other people who have that same problem."
“By working on our Bronze Award project, I have learned many things about myself, like how I love researching, designing, and building,” said Sahana Ajay. “I have also realized that I am a good team player. Overall, it was a very rewarding experience."
“I learned to be a team player and help when someone needed it,” said Natalie Rodger. “These skills will help me in the future."
The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior, girls in 4th-5th grade can achieve. It requires girls to identify a need in their community and dedicate on average more than 20 hours towards addressing and solving the issue. When Girl Scout Juniors focus on an issue, they care about, learn the facts, take action to make a difference, they gain the confidence and skills that catapult them to lifelong success.
