DOVE INVITES GIRL SCOUTS TO PARTICIPATE IN SECOND ANNUAL
DOVE SELF-ESTEEM WEEKEND (10/21/11-10/23/11)
** Self-esteem building events to take place nationwide in effort to inspire all women and girls to reach their full potential **
The second annual Dove Self-Esteem Weekend encourages women everywhere to commit to spending one hour on an self-esteem building activity with a girl in their lives. Participate in the Weekend by hosting a troop meeting that highlights activities from the newest Leadership Journey Series, sponsored in part by Dove, It’s Your Story – Tell It!, or spend just an hour or two with your Girl Scout daughter or friend of the family.
Currently, 72% of girls feel tremendous pressure to be beautiful but only 11% would describe themselves as such . This anxiety affects girls’ achievement potential because when girls feel bad about their looks, more than 70% (age 15 to 17) avoid normal daily activities such as attending school, going to the doctor, or even giving their opinion . It is important for us to address this anxiety about looks at an early age because research has shown that self-esteem dips even further when girls grow up, with only 4% of women who would describe themselves as beautiful . Dove believes that everyone has the opportunity to make a difference in a girl’s self-esteem and is taking this opportunity inspire all women and girls to reach their full potential.
Instructions
- Schedule a troop meeting to take place between October 21 and 23. Invite the girls’ mothers/guardians to attend as well. If you are unable to meet as a troop, encourage the mothers of girls in your troop to do activities with their daughters at home and report them in. There are resources for mother/daughter activities and even online activities (see web address in #4).
- Individual girls can report in activities as well, but are not eligible for the Spa Party. Individual girls who do activities instead of doing them with a troop will be entered into a drawing for a Shoot and Share video camera.
- Troops are asked to spend at least one hour on these activities. You may view the entire Toolkit and other resources at http://www.dove.us/Social-Mission/Self-Esteem-Toolkit-And-Resources/, should you wish to do different activities.
- Take photos and/or videos of the girls doing the activities. You must submit at least one of these when reporting your activities.
- Once the troop or individual has completed activities, go to http://www.girlscoutsem.org/webforms/SelfEsteemWeekendReport.aspx to report in and upload photos/video. You must do this by October 25 for your troop to be eligible to win one of the three Spa Parties.
- The drawing for the Spa Parties and video cameras will take place the week of October 24. Winners will be notified by telephone
