normandy middle school science club
For the 2011-2012 academic year, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri started a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) club at Normandy Middle School. The club meets several times each month for non-formal classroom STEM immersion, cultural enrichment activities, and community service.
STEM activities focus on hands-on, engaging, and fun discovery and exploration, including field trips. Cultural enrichment activities include life skill development and support such as self-esteem or financial literacy workshops, conflict resolution, time management, and study skills; physical exercise and enrichment activities such as dance and yoga; and exploring the science of art, cuisine, music, and fashion.
This program provides girls with the support they need, give them direction, reduce stereotypes about career paths, and help build the skills they need for the future. The program objectives are:
Project Objectives:
- Girls will be able to demonstrate their ability to perform a particular STEM-related skill or activity (e.g. robotics).
- Girls will see designated career choice as possible/advantageous choice for women and minorities.
- Influence girls to attend college and consider STEM studies.
- Increase girls’ self-confidence
- Improvement in behavior at school
- Increase girls’ knowledge of how STEM fits into many different careers and real world activities.
- Increase girls’ grades in the areas of science, mathematics, and technology.
- Increase girls’ interest in science, math, engineering, and technology careers.
