cookie information for customers
FOR GIRLS | FOR VOLUNTEERS | FOR CUSTOMERS | FOR GIRL SCOUT FAMILIES
Thank you for supporting the Girl Scout Cookie Activity!
Your purchase of Girl Scout Cookies is essential to helping fund the Girl Scout program in your community. Your interaction with the girls—as they hone their customer service and marketing skills and become more confident connecting to others—provides them with a valuable experience. As a Cookie Entrepreneur Officer, each Girl Scout can run her Girl Scout Cookie Sale as a serious business. Thanks to the cookie sale, girls in eastern Missouri have traveled across the USA and the world; funded service projects; explored countless museums, parks, and fairs; and met girls from all across our region at events and camps.
Girl Scouts are encouraged to set two kinds of cookie goals:
- What can we do for fun and learning with our cookie proceeds?
- What can we do with our cookie proceeds to help others?
Thank you for helping a girl to reach her goal!
In today’s busy world, many customers may not be home when a Girl Scout comes by to sell cookies door-to-door. Although Girl Scout Cookies cannot be purchased over the Internet, some girls are using e-mail and personal Web sites to reach customers.
Is the purchase of Girl Scout Cookies tax-deductible?
No, the purchase is not tax-deductible if the customer keeps the cookies. Individuals who buy Girl Scout Cookies and take the cookies home, or consume them, have purchased a product at a fair market value. For this reason, no part of the price of a box of Girl Scout Cookies used in this way is tax-deductible.
Yes, if the customer leaves the cookies with Girl Scouts. Many Girl Scouts ask customers to pay for one or more boxes of cookies for use in their community service project (for example, collecting for a food pantry). Customers not receiving any Girl Scout Cookies do not benefit directly from paying for them. Those individuals may treat the purchase price of the donated cookies as a charitable contribution. Individuals with specific questions should seek advice from a tax accountant.
