April Showers Reporting

Help local families and individuals in need

  • Bag Distribution:  April 12 – 14
  • “Showering the Community” – April 13
  • Bag Collection:  April 20
Emerson, thank you for your five-year commitment as the 2009-13 April Showers Sponsor!

Mark your calendar – on April 13, bag distribution Saturday, GSEM will hold the second “Showering the Community’ event at 30 area Walmarts. The “Showering the Community” event was introduced in 2012 and was an overwhelming success. More than 162,000 items were collected at 33 Walmarts in our pilot year. Before or after your troop delivers their assigned bags, you will come to a Walmart store in your area to encourage donations and collect items. Girls will distribute April Showers raindrops listing the personal care items needed to Walmart customers entering the store and collect the donated items from customers on their way out.

Did you know?

  • In Missouri, among families with their own children under 18, almost 17 percent reported an income of less than $25,000
  • In Missouri, about one in every five kids under 18 live in families where the income is below the federal poverty level
  • New figures released by the U. S. Census Bureau show that since 2000, the percentage of Missourians living in poverty has nearly doubled. This number grew at more than 3.5 times the national average

Girl Scouts, their troop leaders, families and friends can help families in need through participating in Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s premier community service program, April Showers. It involves two weekends:

The first weekend, April 12, 13, and 14 is devoted to the door-to-door distribution of bags throughout the council’s jurisdiction. Girls should not place April Showers bags in or tie to mailboxes; this is prohibited by the US Postal Service.

On the second Saturday, April 20, girls return and collect bags filled with personal care items. Girls should only collect from residences where bags are left outside. Girls should not knock on doors.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri encourages all April Showers Troop Reports to be completed within one day of April Showers collection. Information about April Showers is used to report to the community the impact of the service provided by the girls. Help us tell the success story of this amazing service program by turning in your Troop Collection Day Report (AS-1) to the Data Collection Coordinator at your designated collection site when your troop is finished collecting, counting and sorting

Plan your troop participation early and stay tuned for localized kick-offs in your area. Let’s make this our biggest April Showers drive ever! Stay tuned for more exciting news about our personal care item drive.
